GPS Could Monitor Lorry Drivers' Rest Periods

The Government has said it is considering the implementation of GPS systems to ensure Irish goods vehicle drivers are complying with rest periods and drive times.

On Thursday, Oireachtas Transport Committee member and TD Seán Kenny, welcomed an announcement by the Transport Minister that he intends to implement a GPS system to monitor industry compliance by Road Haulage drivers.

Leo Varadkar said he is to consider introducing the system to monitor tachograph readings that would inform authorities if drivers were not complying with rules on taking required breaks and driving beyond their recommended durations.

Responding to the plan, Sean Kenny said: "I raised a concern at today's committee meeting that there was a culture of non compliance in the industry in relation to road transport drivers not adhering to the rules for driving times and rest period - Minister Varadkar told me that a GPS system will be considered.

"I also welcome the Minister's announcement on road safety grounds - a GPS system would decrease the level of accidents."
