Three Hospitalised After Taking Tipp Trips
The Health Service has issued a warning to the public after a number of people have admitted themselves to the Emergency department in South Tipperary after taking a suspected strong batch of Ecstasy.
The HSE said it become aware of at least three people presenting to the Emergency Department in South Tipperary General Hospital in the last week who have required medical treatment and intervention as a result of taking ecstasy.
The three people were treated and have since been discharged.
According to the HSE, the people exhibited severe symptoms including severe stomach cramps, hallucinations, jaw clenching and teeth grinding, after reporting using ecstasy. While investigations are ongoing into these cases, it is believed they are as a result of a strong batch of ecstasy, which may be in circulation.
Tests have shown those affected had taken the drug, which contained a combination of MDMA (ecstasy), MDA and MDEA.
Prof Joe Barry, HSE Addiction Services said: “While the HSE is aware of a number of people presenting to an ED in the South of the country, this suspected bad batch of ecstasy may be in circulation in other areas. It is important that anyone displaying side effects following the use of drugs seek medical help immediately.”
The HSE has alerted medical professionals in the region to be alert for patients presenting with these symptoms. Community and voluntary groups working with drug users have also been alerted and Gardai are aware of the matter.
