Firms Announce Equality Initiative
The body representing Ireland's small and medium enterprises have launched a guide to equality in the workplace saying it can enhance performance.
The Small and Medium Sized Enterprises Association (ISME) said the guide will provide small, employers with the necessary information to assist owner managers to prepare their own equality policies and procedures.
ISME said the guide, compiled in association with the Equality Authority, will eventually lead to better job satisfaction and less stree in the workplace.
Commenting at the launch of the guide, Equality Authority CEO, Renee Dempsey stated: “Many SMEs have been leaders in promoting equality and recognise the business case for investing in equality and diversity. Equality policies can enhance organizational performance and workplaces that have them are less likely to discriminate against employees.
"In turn, their workers are more productive, enjoy better job satisfaction and experience less stress”.
Meanwhile, according to ISME Chief Executive, Mark Fielding, the issue of equality in the workplace was extremely important from an SME perspective as it ensured a "harmonious workplace", beneficial to both employers and employees. "There is clear evidence that initiatives that promote workplace equality and foster diversity, improve workplace relations and enhance company performance. It is essential therefore that employers have the appropriate policies to ensure that equality in the workplace is adhered to for the benefit of all concerned.”
The guide has been distributed to all ISME members and is available to view at www.isme.ie.
