O'Sullivan Appointed "Super Junior" Minister

Labour TD for Limerick Jan O'Sullivan will be appointed as the "super junior" minister at cabinet, it has been announced.

The appointment announcement comes after a meeting on Tuesday where ministers decided to promote the Minister of State to replace Willie Penrose, who resigned earlier this year.

Ms O'Sullivan, 61, who represents Limerick City, was until today the junior minister at Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

It is believed that Ms O'Sullivan is to gainMr Penrose's housing portfolio, while speaking this afternoon, Ms O'Sullivan said her immediate priority would be the plight of the homeless.

Dublin Central TD Joe Costello - who was director of elections in Michael D Higgins successful Presidential campaign - has been appointed to succeed her as Minister of State with responsibility for Trade, Development, and Third World Aid.

Five Junior Minister Posts To Be Scrapped
It has emerged that five junior minister posts are to be scrapped by Brian Cowen later this month. According to reports today, Mr Cowen held a half-hour meeting with all 20 junior Ministers on Monday morning where he asked all the junior ministers to resign on April 21st.

More Than 600 New Special Needs Assistants Approved
An additional 610 Special Needs Assistant (SNA) posts have been approved by the government. The new allocation, due to begin in September, a significant increase in assessed need, Minister for Education and Skills, Jan O’Sullivan, said. Funding Allocated For New Social Housing
The government have allocated some €100m in funding for the building of 808 new social houses over the next two years. The houses will be the last built under the current government and will largely be used to house the homeless, elderly and people with disabilities.
