Fire At Dublin Church 'Suspicious'

A fire at St Catherine’s Church in Meath Street in Dublin has been called "suspicious" by Gardaí.

Officers investigating the circumstances of the fire, which occurred on January 2 said they arrested a man in his 50s in connection with the incident. He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Kevin St Garda Station.

According to Gardaí, at approximately 4.40pm, Gardai and Fire Services were called when a fire broke out at the church before it was subsequently brought under control by units of the Fire Services at approximately 6.15pm.

Firefighters took two hours to get the blaze under control and the Meath Street church sustained both fire and water damage.

The scene is preserved pending a full technical examination.

Mountjoy Prison Cell Fire
A fire broke out in a cell at Dublin's Mountjoy Prison on Thursday night, according to reports. It is understood that a prisoner had set fire to a cell. However, it is believed that prison staff and fire crews were able to contain the fire quickly. No-one was injured in the incident.

Theives have stolen the tabernacle from St Brigids church in Dublin. Gardaí in Raheny said they are appealing for information from the public in tracing the valuable Tabernacle - the container is used to keep the host during a church service.

Man Charged Over Murdered Pensioner
A 29-year-old man has been charged with the murder of pensioner Edward Boylan in Dublin in January this year. Mr Boylan, 74, was attacked and stabbed at his home in Ravensdale Close, Kimmage. Fire fighters were called to a blaze at his home when his body was discovered. The suspect is being detained at Crumlin Garda Station.
