Workplace Deaths Up 15% In 2010

Deaths in the workplace have shot up by 15% on 2010's figures, according to the Health and Safety Authority.

The figures, released on Tuesday, reveal that fifty-five people died in the workplace last year compared to 48 in 2010.

A usual, most deaths were attributed to the agriculture sector with some 22 people killed during the year.

The next highest sector for fatalities was transportation and storage, where eight people died. A total of six deaths were recorded in construction, which is also has a relatively high fatality rate. Fishing and aquaculture recorded five.

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has launched an awareness campaign aimed at encouraging farmers to stop taking risks.

Workplace Fatalities Down 13%
Workplace deaths fell by 13% in 2012, according to figures released by the Health and Safety Authority. The number of people killed in the workplace fell from 54 in 2011 to 47 last year. The agriculture sector recorded the highest number of deaths for the third year in succession with some 21 fatalities, one less than in 2011.

Investigation Launched Into Fatal Quarry Accident
Gardaí have launched an investigation into a fatal workplace accident in Co Mayo. It is understood a man in his 20s was fatally injured in an accident at about 10am this morning at a quarry in Kilkelly. The quarry has been sealed pending a forensic examination. The Health and Safety Authority has been informed.

Irish Population Leaps Ahead Of UK
While Northern Ireland's population has now exceeded 1.75 million and is growing faster than any other UK region - it is dwarfed by the rate of increase in the Irish Republic. Official statistics just revealed today show that in mid 2007, the number of people living in the North had increased by 1.0% over the previous year.

Work-Related Deaths Gravely Underestimated
One of Ireland's largest trade unions has said that the actual number of work-related deaths in Ireland is more than 23 times the official figure. According to Siptu, 1,400 people died every year as a result of accidents, illnesses and diseases linked to their employment, as opposed to official statistics of around 60.

Birth Rate Up In First 3 Months Of 2008
There was almost a 10% jump in the number of babies born in Ireland during the first three months of this year, compared to 2007. Figures released by the Central Statistics Office report 19,000 births during January, February and March.
