Journalist Mary Raftery Dies Aged 54

Journalist Mary Raftery died this morning following an illness.

The 54-year-old was best known for the 'States of Fear' documentary series which revealed the extent of physical and sexual abuse suffered by children in Irish State schools which were run by the church.

She also produced and directed RTE’s 'Prime Time Investigates: Cardinal Secrets' programme which led to the formation of the Murphy Commission of Investigation into child sex abuse in the Dublin Archdiocese.

Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin has expressed his shock and sadness following the death of the journalist and documentary-maker Mary Raftery.

Deputy Martin said: "Mary was a groundbreaking, inspirational journalist who made a major contribution to Irish public life. Through her work Mary raised the level of public debate in this country and touched many lives.

"Mary tirelessly campaigned for the rights of those who were abused and mistreated and challenged the status quo. As a result of her work Mary is held in the highest regard by so many people across the country who will feel a huge sense of loss today following her untimely death."

She is survived by her husband David Waddell and their son Ben.

Man Extradited From US To Dublin
Gardaí have confirmed a 33-year-old man has been extradited from the United States to Ireland to in connection with alleged sexual abuse. It is understood he faces charges of alleged sexual abuse against two underage girls in Ireland between 2010 and 2011. He arrived in Dublin on Wednesday morning (23 July) before later appearing in court.

Former Cork Lord Mayor Denies Sexual Assault Charges
A former Lord Mayor of Cork has denied six charges of sexual assault of a teenage girl between March 1996 and October 1998. 83-year-old John Murray is standing trial charged with six counts of sexually assaulting the girl at four locations in the city over a two-year period.
