INMO Calls For Urgent Meeting With Cavan Hospital Management

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) has learned that management of Cavan General Hospital has sanctioned cutbacks in the order of 25% to its Out Patient Department and plans to radically reduce elective surgery at the hospital.

The cutbacks to OPD are due to be implemented on Monday, 23rd January, in order to achieve cost savings.

Members of the Organisation are appalled that management is drawing up such plans in the absence of any consultation or discussion at local level. These plans will lead to excessive waiting times and the extension of waiting lists for patients in what is already an over-stretched service. The limiting and reduction of elective surgery at Cavan General Hospital will mean longer waiting lists and further unnecessary suffering for patients awaiting surgery.

This development is in breach of the Croke Park Agreement and is being implemented without consultation with the Organisation.

There has been no public awareness campaign and it is apparent that Cavan General Hospital is implementing even more drastic cuts than those proposed in the HSE Service Plan which was rejected by Minister Reilly last week. The INMO has written to management of the Hospital demanding an urgent meeting to discuss these cutbacks and how services can be maintained in light of these decisions.

Speaking today, INMO Industrial Relations Officer, Derek Reilly said: "These proposals will have a devastating effect upon patient services in Cavan. Members of the INMO are seriously concerned about the effect these cutbacks will have on patients and how safe patient care and safe practice will be maintained.

"The INMO has sought an urgent meeting with management at the Hospital to discuss these cutbacks. There is a requirement for the expansion of services in Cavan and not, as is proposed, the further constriction of services."
