Derry Fleadh Bid Reinstated

The Ulster Council of Comhaltas has reversed its decision for Derry to host the All-Ireland Fleadh in 2013.

Last Sunday, executive members said they would not support the bid due to the threat of dissident attacks, however, last night this was overturned and a decision on whether the city will host the event will take place this weekend.

Alliance Culture, Arts and Leisure Spokesperson Anna Lo MLA said: "I am so pleased that this decision has been reversed by the Ulster Council of Comhaltas.

"The Fleadh is an exciting and vibrant cultural event which will attract many tourists and have a very positive impact as regards the economy. Derry is the ideal location for this event and I am very glad that this decision has been changed.

"Londonderry will be UK City of Culture in 2013 and this is the perfect year for the city to host the Fleadh. For this event not to happen here in 2013 would look very bizarre.

"Any decision to refuse a location the chance to host an event due to terrorism sends out a very negative message. We must never let any terrorist organisation prevent positive events from being hosted. We are moving Northern Ireland forward to a brighter future and must never let those who wish to cause fear prevail."

Sligo and Ennis have also applied to host the fleadh next year.
