Department Of Justice Attacked By Hackers

The Department of Justice has reported there is "no damage done" after it was attacked by a high profile hacker group on Wednesday morning.

The Department of Justice and the Department of Finance websites were both taken offline for a short time in the early hours of the morning after the apparent cyber attack.

According to the Government, the attacks are believed to be linked to a move to implement EU copyright legislation and re-state the rights that "already exist in Irish copyright law".

In a statement, a spokesman for the Department of Justice said: "Last night the Department of Justice and Finance websites experienced a Distributed Denial of Service attack. This is not an attempt to extract information from the website but is instead an attempt to stop access to a service.

"There seems to be no damage done to the website, however a review is being conducted this morning. The situation continues to be monitored by the Department of Justice and the Department of Communication. Gardai have been contacted on the matter.

"The Government is aware of the potential threat of this type of cyber attack and the Department of Communications is coordinating a whole of Government response to this threat."

The group responsible is called Anonymous, who were originally involved in the shut down of a number of large US governmental sites after they moved to shut down file-sharing site, Megaupload.
