Tabernacle Stolen From St Brigids Church

Theives have stolen the tabernacle from St Brigids church in Dublin.

Gardaí in Raheny said they are appealing for information from the public in tracing the valuable Tabernacle - the container is used to keep the host during a church service.

The Tabernacle was stolen from St Brigids Church, Killester, Dublin 5 on Monday between 12 noon and 3pm while the church was open to the public.

The Reliquary/ Tabernacle has a very distinctive celtic design on the front and on the two sides. It also has double doors on the front and had been in the church for over 50 years.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Gardaí at Raheny 01-666 4300, the Garda Confidential Line 1-800-666-111 or any Garda Station.

Catholic Church Could Fall 'Over The Brink'
The Catholic Church could "fall over the brink" and become irrelevant to society, according to the Archbishop of Dublin. In a dramatic speech to the Cambridge Group for Irish Studies in the Magdalene College in Cambridge, Diarmuid Martin said that Catholicism in Ireland was being reduced to a tiny minority and becoming "irrelevant in society".

Church Owes €50m To Abused Victims
The Catholic Church owes the Government more than €50 million of the compensation promised to victims of clerical sex abuse. The overall compensation package will cost €1.1 billion, but a deal with the religious orders struck with the state limits their liability to €128m. The rest of this figure was agreed to be paid by the Irish taxpayer.

14 Suspected Stolen Vehicles Seized In Co Longford
14 suspected stolen vehicles have been seized in a garda operation in Co Longford. In an intelligence led operation, garda seized 12 Ford transit vans, a camper van and a caravan. Garda from Granard and Longford were joined by officers from the Department of Social Welfare and officers from Revenue Custom and Excise.
