Works Will Sustain Jobs For Around 3,800 People
Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Leo Varadkar has announced details of the €379.5 million investment programme for 2012 for regional and local roads.
Minister Varadkar said the package represented an average spend of €31.6 million every month this year on regional and local roads and will sustain employment for around 3,800 people.
The funding followed on from the separate allocation for national roads: “This is a significant investment in roads given the current economic climate. Our priority is to maintain the existing road network, but there will also be scope to carry out some road improvement projects as well.
“The investment includes 120 projects under the Specific & Strategic Projects scheme, improvement works on 13 strategic regional roads, and more than 200 low-cost safety projects.”
The Minister said overall funding had risen slightly this year, not including last year’s €60 million one-off allocation from the Jobs Initiative, and local authorities would also be able to change their programmes to target limited resources at areas where they are most needed.
