Murder Weapon Discovered In Drive-By Shooting

Gardaí investigating the murder of teenager Melanie McCarthy-McNamara have found a shotgun, believed to be the murder weapon.

Detectives found a shotgun, balaclava and gloves near Bianconi Avenue where they discovered the stolen black Hyundai used by the killers.

The 16-year-old was shot in the head as she sat in a parked car with three friends on Brookview Way on Tuesday night.

It is believed the gunman pulled up alongside the parked car and open fire before speeding off.

It is believed the girl was an innocent target and her family and friends have been paying tribute to the teenager.

Minister Shatter said: "I deplore the shooting last night of a teenage girl at Brookview Way, Tallaght. All violent deaths are shocking but the killing of a young person especially so. I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to her family and friends.

"The Gardaí have a major investigation underway, an incident room has been established, and technical and forensic examinations are being carried out. The Commissioner will keep me informed of progress on the investigation.

"That investigation is, however, at an early stage and it would not be appropriate for me to comment on speculation around its circumstances or the motivation of those involved.

"I call on anyone who might be able to help the Gardaí in any way to contact them."
