Cost Of Housing Now Biggest Expenditure
The cost of housing has replaced the cost of food as the biggest household expense.
The average cost of housing has risen to €147.73 per week, compared with €94.57 per week in 2004/05.
During the same period spending on food fell from €142 per week to €131.28.
The findings come as part of the latest survey by the Central Statistics Office, which carries out a household expenditure survey evey five years.
Since 1980 food as a share of weekly spending has fallen from 27.7% to 16.2%, while spending on housing has risen from 7.2% to 18.2% today.
Average weekly spending has risen 3% since the 2004/05 survey, going from €787.07 then to €810.61 in 2009/10.
Average household income now stands at €1,027.77 per week, up 4% from the 2004/05 survey.

Budget 2019 Pension And Social Welfare Increase To Come Into Effect
Pension and social welfare increases introduced in Budget 2019 will come into effect next week, the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection, Regina Doherty, has announced. Budget 2019 included €362 million in additional social welfare expenditure, bringing the total social welfare spend to €20.5 billion for the year.

Govt Announce 1200 Jobs Created Per Week In Past Year
Launching the government’s latest jobs report, the Taoiseach, Tánaiste and Minister for Jobs have highlighted that on average 1200 jobs have been created per week in the past year. A Central Statistics Office reports shows that 22,500 jobs have been added across the country in the past three months; that the unemployment rate has decreased to 12.

HSE Reverse SNA Preschool Cuts
The Health Service Executive (HSE) has reversed its decision to reduce the provision of SNA services in preschools. The HSE had previously announced that the provision was to be cut completely. However, following an outcry, they decided that the service would not be stopped but reduced by 25%.
