'Special Needs' Plea An Insult

A judge has said the suggestion that Wayne Bradley carried out a botched cash van raid because he has special needs is an insult to special needs children.

33-year-old Wayne Bradley and 38-year-old Alan Bradley were convicted of conspiring to steal cash from Chubb Ireland on November 2, 2007 at Tesco, Celbridge, Co Kildare.

Aileen Donnelly, Wayne’s defence counsel, presented evidence that Wayne was "pressurised" into taking part in the raid by others but did not mention their names. Judge Tony Hunt rejected this and said he would have to overcome his “visceral reaction” to the case when passing sentence after hearing Bradley’s mitigation plea rejected this.

Judge Hunt said the 10-year maximum penalty was inadequate for the offence.

The brothers are due to be sentenced for the raid next month.
