President To Attend Titanic Commemoration

President Michael D Higgins is to attend a service in Cork to mark the the 100th anniversary of the Titanic.

The final passengers boarded the ship in Cobh before embarking on its journey.

Almost 1,500 people died in the sinking of the Titanic, after it hit an iceberg in the North Atlantic.

The tribute, part of Cobh's Titanic 100 programme of commemorative events, will see a naval fleet review and a flyover from the Irish Air Corps.

President Higgins To Lead Commemoration Event In Cobh
President Michael D Higgins is to lead a commemoration event in Cobh on Thursday 7 May to mark the centenary of the sinking of the Lusitania. The event will also be attended by the British, German and US ambassadors. Road closures will be in effect in Casement Square and on part of Westbourne Place from 11.30am until 10.30pm.

President To Attend Removal Of Garda
The outgoing President Mary McAleese will this evening attend the removal of Garda Ciarán Jones who died on Monday while trying to help commuters who were struck in the severe flooding. The 25-year-old, who was off duty at the time, was swept away by floodwaters at Ballysmuttan bridge in County Wicklow.

US Vice President Mike Pence is considering a visit to Ireland later this year, according to reports. Mr Pence, who has Irish roots, is expected to visit for three days in September. The Indiana man has family connections in counties Sligo and Clare.
