Tánaiste Calls For Cardinal To Resign

The Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore has called on Cardinal Seán Brady to resign in the wake of the latest child abuse scandal.

Speaking in the Dáil today it was his own personal view and "that nobody who did not deal with the scale of the abuse that we have seen in this case should not hold a position of authority".

It follows allegations in a BBC This World documentary, that information on victims of paedophile Brendan Smyth was given to a Church investigation of which Seán Brady was a member. However, the information was never passed on to the parents of the children or the Garda.

He said: “The rape of a child, the abuse of a child is a crime. It was a crime then. The place for crimes to be prosecuted and dealt with is in our courts.

“I don’t believe there is a parallel system of law that deals with these matters and anybody who had knowledge about the rape and abuse of a child has a duty to report it to authorities."
