Number Of Houses Being Built Begins To Ease
The number of houses being built is beginning to ease according to the National Housing Construction Index survey, published by Link2Plans.
The survey found that overall planning applications dropped 20%, compared to a drop of 23% from January To April last year.
Donegal, Longford and Leitrim had a slight rise in applications, however the biggest fall was in Kildare and Kerry.
Housing commencement notices fell by 13%.
Managing director Danny O'Shea also observed a 16% increase in the number of people extending their planning permission for up to five years.
He said: "Our researchers noticed an increase in planning applications for extensions of duration…Applicants are allowed to apply for an extension of the duration once only, for up to five years."

30.5% Drop In Planning Applications - CSO
There has been a 30.5% drop in the number of planning permission applications granted for new houses in the first quarter of this year, according to the Central Statistics Office (CSO). Planning permissions were granted for 1,446 houses in the first quarter of 2014 and 1,860 in the first quarter of 2013, a decrease of 22.3%.

Budget 2019 Housing Proposals 'Show No Imagination'
The housing proposals included in the Budget 2019 show "no imagination" and will do nothing to ease the housing crisis when it comes to rent, according to Labour Housing spokesperson, Jan O'Sullivan. Deputy O'Sullivan continued: "The budgetary measures leaked this overnight show that Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil have little regard for renters.

Investigation Launched Into Cork Shopping Centre Fire
An investigation has been launched into a fire at a shopping centre in Cork. Cork City Fire Service was called just before 14:00 after a fie broke out in a hair saloon at the entrance to Douglas Shopping Centre. The centre, which also houses branches of Tesco and Marks & Spencer, was evacuated while fire crews dealt with the blaze.

A leading European planner has said she is "astonished" by the sprawl of housing in Ireland. Virna Bussadori, President of the European Council of Spatial Planners described Ireland's rural planning as "random" and said it represented a "spoiling of the territory".

In the third quarter of 2012, planning permissions were granted for 1,638 dwelling units, compared with 2,512 units for the same period in 2011, a decrease of 34.8 %, according to the Central Statistics Office (CSO).
