Child Dies After Freak Holiday Accident
A 2-year-old child has died following a freak accident in which she was struck by a caravan trailer while on holidays.
Erin Thomson was hit by the trailer while playing on a remote beach in Co Mayo.
The little girl from Belfast had been on holiday in the area with members of her extended family when the fatality occurred last Saturday.
It is understood a caravan was reversing when it struck the child, fatally injuring her.
Gardai said they were treating it as a tragic accident.
Her family, who are from Gilnahirk Chase in Belfast, were last night being comforted by friends and relatives.
Her remains have been brought back to Belfast ahead of her funeral this weekend.
"It happened in an instant. The hearts of the local community go out to the family who are devastated by their loss," Superintendent Pat McHugh of Ballina garda station said.
