Kenny Pledges to Make Mental Health Care A Priority
At the launch of a suicide bereavement centre yesterday Taoiseach Enda Kenny vowed to make mental health facilities a core part of health services around the country.
Mr Kenny said mental health could no longer be viewed as "a sort of Cinderella area of the services".
"It is so central and so sensitive to our communities that it deserves the very best from the Government and that it shall have," he added.
Mr Kenny was in Swinford in Co Mayo to open the Console Centre for Suicide Bereavement Counselling Services.
During the same trip he also visited St Patrick's National School in Cornanool, Castlebar.
The school was hosting a HB Ice Cream Funday Party for Down Syndrome Ireland and Mr Kenny enjoyed a slice of vanilla alongside the school children.
Among the school children was Amey Tobin (11) along with chief executive of Down Syndrome Ireland, Pat Clarke, and his son David.

2,700 Children Waiting To Access Mental Health Services
Some 2,700 children are waiting to be seen by Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services amid a recruitment and retention crisis in the sector. Figures from the HSE were released to Sinn Féin Health spokesperson, Louise O'Reilly, and reveal that there is currently 13 vacant consultant posts and a shortage of psychiatric nurses.

Funding taken from the mental health budget must be paid back, Labour TD Jan O'Sullivan has said. Deputy O'Sullivan made the call while speaking in a Dáil debate on mental health, where she said that €12m taken from the mental health budget this year, could not be allowed to fall into "the black hole of the general Health budget".
