Suspended Sentence For Sex Assault Dentist

A 60-year old dentist has been given a 15-month suspended jail sentence for sexually assaulting a dental nurse at his practice over five years ago.

At his sentencing hearing today John Tait of Upper Rochestown, Cork, accepted he had caused the victim's upset, despite contesting the charge during the four-day trial.

His victim was a 19-year old dental nurse, who had landed what she described as the job she always wanted when she began working for Mr Tait a week before Christmas, 2006.

Tait promised he would help further her career; he also offered her free dental treatment.

Three days into her work, while they were alone in his surgery, Tait conducted an examination on the young woman. He lifted her vest and exposed her breasts for around a minute.

For four days during his trial, Tait denied the charge of sexual assault but the jury convicted him.

Only at his sentencing hearing this morning did he accept that he had caused the victim's upset and he apologised to her.
