Man Held Over Damage To Monet Receiving Medical Treatment
A man has been remanded in custody after being charged with causing criminal damage to an oil painting by Claude Monet, he will also receive medical treatment.
47-year-old Andrew Shannon of Willan's Way, Ongar, Dublin, was arrested after the damage was caused to Monet's 'Argenteuil Basin with a Single Sailboat' painting at the National Gallery on June 29.
The 1874 painting, which is believed to be insured for up to €7m, had been exhibited at the gallery's room 10 but has since been removed for examination.
Following his arrest on Saturday, and while in Garda custody, Mr Shannon complained that he was feeling ill and was brought to St James's Hospital.
Judge Cormac Dunne had been told that Mr Shannon was taken into the care of a cardiologist at the hospital and could not be brought to court yesterday. The case was adjourned until a late sitting and Mr Shannon was then brought before the court.
The presiding judge was told there would be an objection to bail. However, counsel for Mr Shannon said there would be no bail application.
Counsel requested free legal aid and explained Mr Shannon was in receipt of a disability payment. The judge agreed after noting that there was no garda objection. He remanded Mr Shannon, who has not yet indicated how he will plead to the charge, in custody to appear again at Cloverhill District Court on Friday.
