Cork Couple Fighting For Lives After UK Road Crash

A couple from Cork remain critically ill in hospital after they were seriously injured in a car crash in England last Friday.

Con Twomey, 39, and his 36-year-old wife Elber, from Kanturk in north Cork, were injured in a two-car collision near Torquay.

Their two-year-old son, Oisín, died in the crash, and the couple also lost their unborn baby.

The driver of the second car, a Polish man in his 20s, was arrested before he died from his injuries.

Police however have said they are not treating the crash as a "straightforward collision".

Devon and Cornwall's Assistant Chief Constable Paul Netherton said: "It was a head-on collision at speed.

"The Vectra was coming down the hill and appears to have swerved into the path of the oncoming car."

Someone known to the Polish man who was concerned for his wellbeing had contacted police. It is understood this report was made following the discovery of a suicide note. However, police declined to comment.

But a spokesman confirmed that officers had been given details of the man's car and he had been spotted just moments before the impact, too late to do anything to prevent it.

"We have a witness that says he passed the car a mile down the road (before it had been spotted by police) and he was travelling at speed," he said.

The road was closed for more than 10 hours following the crash while the vehicles were recovered and forensic examinations took place.
