Thousands Of Litres Of Diesel Sludge Found Dumped
An estimated 3,000 litres of diesel sludge have been found dumped in north Co Louth.
Three containers of the toxic oil-laundering waste were discovered on a slip road at Carrickarnon close to the main Dublin-Belfast road late on Wednesday night.
The sludge is generated after green dye is removed from agricultural diesel, which is then sold as road diesel in a multi-million-euro cross-Border racket.
Two of the containers were on fire and had to be dealt with by the Dundalk fire service.
North Co Louth has in recent years become the main dumping ground for the cross-Border gangs involved in fuel laundering.
Last year the cost to the taxpayer of cleaning up 90 sludge finds in the county amounted to almost €1 million as specialist contractors have to be called in to remove the material, most of which is sent to Germany for safe disposal.
The four local authorities in Louth, Meath, Cavan and Monaghan, which have to deal with the waste, are currently evaluating tenders from expert contractors who will be appointed in the coming months to deal with finds of oil-laundering residue.

Toxic Diesel Sludge Discovered In County Louth
Containers filled with thousands of litres of toxin diesel sludge have been dumped at the side of a road in County Louth. Two of the six containers found were leaking sludge across the R132, and a clean up operation is currently under way. The road is expected to be closed until noon.

Diesel Laundering Costing Exchequer €150m
It has been revealed that diesel laundering is costing the Exchequer €150m in tax revenue every year and that 12% of diesel sold in Ireland is illegal. According to recent findings by Retail Ireland the sale of cheap diesel is seriously damaging public finances, funding criminality and harming the environment.

'Phenomenal' Fuel Prices Hit A Record High
Diesel and petrol prices have hit a record high today, according to a new survey by motoring lobby group AA. The report, which has highlighted the continued price hikes, found the average price of diesel is currently 132.4c - a 7.8c increase in the last month. Meanwhile, petrol has increased by 3.8c to 124.9c on average.

Authorities both North and South must collaborate as part of a multi-agency approach to tackle fuel laundering in the border counties. Fianna Fáil TD for Louth, Seamus Kirk, made the call amid concerns over the dumping of toxic materials affecting water quality in the area.
