Expert Group Offers Breakthrough On Mental Health Issues
Anne Ferris T.D. for Wicklow today welcomed the Minister for Mental Health, Kathleen Lynch's announcement of an Expert Group to review the Mental Health Act 2001, as a real opportunity for better mental health provision in terms of decision-making, treatment and recovery.
"The Expert Group faces a critical task in examining the Interim Report on the Mental Health Act and the range of recommendations that are necessary to ensure a Mental Health system that ensures a person's breakdown becomes their breakthrough.
"This could be a real breakthrough for all affected and is reflected in the fact that the Minister sought to ensure a broad range of expertise from key stakeholders on the Expert Group.
"In addition to psychiatrists and mental health nurses, the group also includes experts with legal, human rights and patient experience and knowledge.
"Our mental health legislation needs to be updated to take into account changes in mental health service, with increased focus on community support, and human rights developments, including sensitive, difficult questions about patient capacity to decide their own treatments and the absolute need for Individual Care Plans involving patient consultation.
"The Minister will attend the first meeting of the group in September and her personal commitment is backed up by the Labour Party's commitment to ensure that the Group's report in March 2013 forms the basis for effective implementation."
