Katie Taylor Wins Place In Olympic Final

Boxer Katie Taylor has made in through to the Olympic finals, securing herself at least a silver medal, after defeating Tajikistan’s Mavzuna Chorieva.

Taylor controlled the fight throughout the four rounds and won 17-9 at the ExCeL Arena.

She will now fight for the gold medal tomorrow afternoon against either Sofya Ochigava of Russia or Adriana Araujo from Brazil.

More than 1,000 people gathered in Bray to watch the fight on two big screens.

In other Olympic boxing news, light-flyweight Paddy Barnes will claim at least a bronze medal if he can win his quarter-final fight against India's Devendro Singh Laishram tonight.

And Michael Conlan last night secured Ireland's third medal of the Games with a 22-18 victory in his flyweight quarter-final contest.

Katie Taylor Wins Ireland's First Olympic Gold
Boxer Katie Taylor secured Irelands first Olympic gold medal yesterday on Thursday evening when she beat Russia’s Sofya Ochigava 10-8. The fight was tied at 2-2 after the first round, and Taylor trailed 4-3 after the second. However, she went on to win the third round 4-1 to lead 7-5. She then kept her lead and held on for the win.

Tragic Boxer Buried
The funeral of Irish Olympic boxer Darren Sutherland is to take place today. Darren was found by his manager Frank Maloney, who has described the death as a "tragedy for Ireland and the world of boxing''. Speaking last week, a Metropolitan Police spokesman said the death in Bromley, south London, was not being treated as suspicious.

Dubliner Faces Brit In Olympic Medal Bout
Boxing Dubliner Ken Egan will be facing a British fighter in a medal decider in Beijing following his convincing win on Tuesday. Irish boxing team captain, Kenny Egan, gave the big-hitting veteran Washington Silva a lesson in Olympic boxing, guaranteeing the Neilstown southpaw at least a bronze medal as he awaits his fight for silver on Friday.
