Gardai Appeal For Help After Taxi Driver Attacked
Gardai in Limerick are asking for help in identifying two men who savagely attacked a taxi driver before leaving him for dead on the side of the road.
The taxi driver was stabbed in the chest with a knife and a screwdriver and forced from his car shortly before 1am on the 4 August after collecting a fare in Limerick city.
Two men were picked up from the drivers base at Treaty Cabs on Davis Street, Limerick, and driven to Newport in Co Tipperary, where he was attacked and thrown out of the car.
The taxi was later found in the Childers Road area of Limerick.
Sgt Tony Wells of Nenagh Garda station said gardaí wanted to hear from anyone who may have seen anything either on Davis Street or in Newport in the early hours of last Saturday morning.
Sgt Wells said the two assailants were aged in their 20s and both spoke with local accents.
One of the men had short black hair, was of slight build and about 1.7m (5ft 7in) in height. He was described as wearing a black tracksuit with a white stripe, and a grey sweatshirt inside.
The second man had short, mousey-coloured hair and was wearing white runners, white socks and a black tracksuit.

Three taxi drivers are challenging the government in the High Court over a decision made 13 years ago to liberalise the taxi market "overnight". According to reports the High Court has heard that the state had acted "unreasonably and unfairly" and had wiped out the value of a taxi licence.

More Inspectors To Clamp Down On Rogue Taxi Drivers
A major new initiative has been launched to tackle rogue taxi drivers, the National Transport Authority (NTA) has announced. The NTA say they will double the number of inspectors, whose job it is to check each taxi driver is fully licensed, tax-compliant and complies fully with rules on vehicle standards.

Taxi Drivers With Serious Convictions To Face Disqualification
Under the new Taxi Regulation Bill, taxi drivers with serious criminal convictions will face mandatory disqualification. Around 6,000 people with SPFV licences who are driving taxis have some form of criminal conviction, according to Minister of State Alan Kelly.
