Anti-Shell Campaigner Faces Charges Over Protests

A prominent anti-Shell campaigner has appeared in court on charges relating to the latest protests against the Shell gas pipeline in Co Mayo.

Maura Harrington, of Doohoma, Belmullet, appeared at yesterday’s vacation court sitting in Ballina on charges relating to two incidents on the 1 and 3 of August.

She was charged with dangerous driving, failure to comply with the direction of gardaí and wilful obstruction on August 3 last at Bellagelly South, Glenamoy.

She was also charged with wilful obstruction and failure to comply with the direction of gardaí on August 1st at Ballinaboy, Barnatra.

Judge Conal Gibbons remanded Ms Harrington on bail and the case will come before Belmullet District Court on September 12.

Tipperary Man Gets Three Years For Sexual Assault of 15-Year-Old
A Tipperary man, found guilty of sexually assaulting the teenage daughter of a neighbour, has been sentenced to three years in jail, with the last year suspended. The 49-year-old man, from Tipperary, who cannot be named to protect the identity of his victim, denied charges of rape and sexual assault at his home on February 9, 2009.

Paedophile Porn Cop Jailed
A former policeman in the North has been jailed after admitting possessing over 600 indecent images of children. Yesterday, Brian Wilfred Richard Connor, 46, from Knockloughrim near Magherafelt, was sentenced to six months in prison.

Charges Follow Wine Warehouse Blaze
Two people have been charged in connection with a fire which badly damaged the Wines Direct warehouse in Mullingar earlier this week. A 16-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man have been arrested and are due to appear at Mullingar District Court next week. A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
