Gardai Investigate Hammer Attack

An investigation has been launched by Cork garda following an attack on a 20-year-old man.

The man was stabbed in the arm and hit on the head with a hammer in the late night attack, which took place in the Mardyke area of the city near University College Cork at about 10.30pm on Friday.

Five men, who got out of a grey van, set about the victim, who it is understood knew his attackers.

The injured man, who is from Togher in Cork, was drinking in a field next to the Mardyke with a female companion when the attack occurred. The woman was unharmed in the incident.

Gardaí spoke to a number of men believed to have been involved in the incident but no arrests were made.

Gardaí are investigating if the incident is linked to an altercation on August 7 when the victim was attacked by a group of men on Farranferris Avenue in the north side of Cork city.
