DPP Considering Appeal On Leniency Of Sex Attack Jail Term

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) is considering an appeal on the leniency of a six-month sentence given to a wealthy aviation broker, for the sexual attack of a woman in Dublin two years ago.

51-year-old Anthony Lyons was convicted of an attack in which he rugby tackled his victim, forced her into undergrowth then tried to remove her clothing and digitally penetrated her. He claimed at his trial that adverse effects of anti-cholesterol medicine he was taking caused the attack, a claim rejected by the jury.

Lyons was sentenced to six years, with five-and-a-half years suspended.

He is due to be released on December 14.

The victim and her family have rejected the court order Lyons, understood to be worth millions, should pay €75,000 in compensation.

This was made clear to the court at the time of the trial in June.

If the DPP appeals the leniency of the sentence Lyons could be already freed by the time the case returns to court.
