Fin Whale Stranded In Baltimore Harbour
A 12-metre (40ft) fin whale has gotten into difficulty in Baltimore harbour, and is stuck against the pier wall in west Cork.
The creature came in to the harbour on a low tide and initially moved 300 to 400 metres offshore before coming back to the small port.
The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) said from the description it is a young fin whale and may be sick or starving.
We’ve been told to keep all the boats back and try not to stress the animal,” said Brendan Cottrell, assistant coxswain on the Baltimore lifeboat and owner of the Cape Clear ferry.
In the UK a 20m fin whale stranded on a beach in Cornwall died earlier this morning, after rescue attempts failed.
