HSE To Announce New Cuts
The HSE is expected to announce a new round of cuts in the health service.
The latest deficit is approximately €260 million, and around €130million is likely to be declared today.
It is expected to rise €500 million by the end of this year.
Earlier this week it was announced that the HSE plan to implement a 50% reduction in the number of agency staff employed at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, Co. Louth, and Our Lady’s Hospital, Navan, Co. Meath.
Health Division Organiser, Paul Bell, said: "The removal of these staff would lead to increased waiting times for patients, cancellation of elective procedures, increased pressure on Emergency Departments and a higher risk of infection as cleaning duties are cut back.
"It is deeply alarming that the report confirms that there is an over reliance on agency and contract staff in both hospitals. The report also confirms the obvious and disturbing consequences of a reduction in staffing numbers, with the associated risks assigned a colour coded level of concern. The report clearly indicates that the staff reductions proposed by the HSE would result in an unacceptable level of risk to patients."
