Minister To Commemorate The 'Liberator'

Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan TD will tomorrow, 1 host a seminar to commemorate the ‘Liberator’, Daniel O'Connell, in Derrynane House, Caherdaniel, Co Kerry on Saturday 1st September, 2012.

The seminar will be addressed by the Minister and two invited speakers, Dan Mulhall and Nettie Douglass.

Dan Mulhall, Irish Ambassador to Germany, will present a paper on ‘King Dan and the German Prince: Daniel O'Connell's meeting with Hermann von Puckler-Muskau, September 1828’.

Nettie Douglass, great great granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, will present a paper on the influence that Daniel O'Connell had on Frederick after meeting him when he came to visit Ireland in 1845. Her paper is entitled 'O'Connell, Douglass and Lincoln: The Legacy of Emancipation'.

Speaking ahead of the seminar Minister Deenihan said that he was delighted to welcome the guest speakers and the audience to the home of Daniel O'Connell.

"I have been a lifelong admirer of Daniel O'Connell and his achievements in asserting through peaceful means the cause of the Irish people at a time when the lot of the ordinary Irishman was arguably at its lowest ebb. I believe that he is distinguished in his age for his dedication to the advancement of society, his recognition of the universality of human rights and his unshakeable commitment to his principles."

Dublin City Centre traffic is set for a series of significant delays and standstills throughout August 2017, Gardaí have reported. To facilitate crucial Luas Cross City construction work, traffic disruptions are expected on Dublin's North and South Quays, from 8 pm on Friday 04 August until 6am on Monday 14 August.

Tens Of Thousands Join Anti-Water Charge Protest
Campaign group Right2Water have lead an anti-water charge protest in Dublin. Right2Water, a coalition of community groups, political parties and trade unions, claim that up to 80,000 people joined Saturday's protest. Other reports put the number of attendees between 30,000 and 40,000.

Thousands Join Pro-Choice Rally In Dublin City Centre
A pro-choice rally in O'Connell Street in Dublin has been attended by around 2,000 people. The demonstration was arranged to protest Ireland's current abortion laws, with banners that read: "repeal the 8th" and "I am not a vessel".

O'Connell Street Re-Opens Following Collision
O'Connell Street has re-opened following an earlier collision involving a car and a Luas. The Luas and Ford Focus crashed at the junction of Abbey Street and O'Connell Street in Dublin at around 10am this morning. Five people have been taken to hospital as a precaution, however none are believed to have serious injuries.
