Overseas Hitman May Have Targeted Alan Ryan

In a killing described as "very professional" it is understood Gardaí are investigating whether a hitman was hired from abroad to kill leading dissident terrorist Alan Ryan.

32-year-old Ryan was walking along a quiet street with two friends, Aaron Neilis and Paul Stewart, when he was targeted.

The gunman, described by eyewitnesses as wearing a disguise and a hat, approached the three men from behind.

Ryan was shot in the body and legs, bringing him to the ground, where he was then shot in the head.

Mr Neilis was also shot in the leg but Mr Stewart escaped injury during the incident.

The gunman then escaped in a silver Volvo, which was later found burnt out at the Hole in the Wall road.

Gardaí have been carrying out house-to-house inquiries near where it was recovered and at the scene of the murder, at Grange Lodge Avenue in Clongriffin.

A forensic examination of the car has not yet been completed but gardai think it was probably bought by the killers, rather than being stolen.

Officers said last night that they were working from an intelligence report that suggested an overseas hitman was brought in, but that that is just one of a large number of lines of inquiry being pursued.
