Bishop Apologises For Moving Two Abusive Priests To A Different Diocese

The Bishop of Clonfert in Galway has apologised for moving two priests to a different diocese after they sexually abused children.

John Kirby spoke to Galway Bay FM after the publication of seven audits into child safeguarding practices in the Catholic church and religious orders.

Both of the changes took place in the mid 1990's.

Speaking on 'The Keith Finnigan Show' he said: "I think that, without making excuses, the mood of the time, very little was known about the insidiousness and the compulsiveness of child sex abuse.

"I think that was true not only in the church but in society at large."

In a statement he admitted it was "a grave mistake" on his part and that he would operate very differently now.

All priests of the diocese have completed basic training and continuous training updates and reviews of all published material will occur at least once every three years.
