Nenagh General To No Longer Treat Emergency Patients

From September 17 patients with emergency cardiology or medical problems will no longer be treated at Nenagh General Hospital.

New plans will now see these patients being assessed and treated at the Emergency Department at the Mid-West Regional Hospital in Limerick.

Nenagh General will now offer a local injuries unit from 8am to 8pm dealing with minor cases. All emergencies will go straight to Limerick.

Nenagh General lost its 24-hour Emergency Department in April 2009, when it was changed to a 12-hour Local Emergency Centre.

The Health Service Executive Mid-West said the change is in line with the National Emergency Medicine Programme and will allow the centralisation of emergency care for the sickest patients in the region to Limerick.

Nenagh Hospital will continue to admit GP referred medical patients with an accompanying letter, with less critical conditions for assessment and treatment in the Medical Assessment Unit.

The existing Local Emergency Centre has been treating 8,000 cases a year.
