FF Councillor Finally Quitting Office After Emigrating A Year Ago

A New Ross town councillor is finally going to resign from office, after immigrating to Australia a year ago.

Fianna Fail councillor Kevin Dwyer continued to keep his seat, despite living in Sydney for the past year. And he was still being paid €175 a month for being a sitting councillor, although he wasn't claiming expenses.

Despite his absence, Mr Dwyer isn't ruling out returning home and running in the next local elections.

The town councillor was likely to be forced to resign anyway after his continued absence. Councillors are allowed to be missing for six months of meetings, and then ask for an extension of leave.

Mr Dwyer was granted an extension in March, which was due to run out later this month.

New Ross Town Council chairman Paul Crowdle said the leave of absence would not have been extended again.

"He couldn't be in Australia and keep serving as a councillor for people in New Ross," he said.

Fianna Fail will decide upon his replacement as council vacancies are not filled by by-election, but rather selected by their party.
