Suicide Conference Hear Of New Concept For Prevention
A new concept, which could help to identify people at risk of taking their own lives, has been revealed at the World Suicide Prevention Day CONFERENCE IN DUBLIN.
The conference heard that the almost universal point made by many family members bereaved by suicide is how the person in distress seemed so normal before the event.
Dr Harry Barry, a GP with a special interest in the area, said a new understanding of the risk factors associated with suicide is needed.
He explained a new concept called the "Suicide Cocoon", which is described as the period after someone in distress has decided to take their own life.
Dr Barry said that during this period for a person who has been in distress, their mood may improve, they seem calmer and family members see them as more at ease.
He said experts needed to understand this period better to try to prevent more suicides.
Figures show 525 people took their own lives in Ireland last year and the rate of suicide is increasing.

HSE Reports Fall In Annual Suicide Rates
New statistics have shown that suicide rates fell to 352 in 2018, a decrease of 40 deaths on the previous year. 282 of those who died by suicide last year were male, while 70 were female.

The government must make suicide prevention a priority, Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams has said. Mr Adams made his comments today to mark International Suicide Prevention Day and called for a fully integrated all-Ireland strategy on suicide prevention.

DUP Slams Iris Reports
The North's Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) has robustly rebuffed reports concerning Iris Robinson printed in yesterday's tabloid newspapers. A spokesman for the party described some of the allegations made as "ruthless lies". According to one paper, Mrs Robinson was preparing to make a 'Tiger Woods-style' public apology for her indiscretions.
