FAS Staff Could Face Sack Over Pornographic Emails

Staff at state agency FAS could be facing the sack over the distribution of thousands of pornographic images.

It is understood that thousands of images were sent and received by workers at FAS, including some containing "graphic nudity, focus on genitalia or suggestive poses", as well as "sexual acts including foreplay and self-sex".

A leading labour lawyer said that the circulation of pornography amounts to "gross misconduct" and would entitle any employer, including the Government, to sack those responsible.

Jonathan Cosgrove, of Farrells Solicitors in Dublin, said: "Those that sourced the material, created an email, and sent it on are guilty of a sackable offence.”

However, he added that it was the people from whom the emails originated that should be held responsible.

"It's behaviour that is beyond what is considered reasonable. The people who sourced this information were guilty of gross misconduct and abuse of the email; not the people who then forwarded it on.”

An audit found that almost 4% of all reported content in FAS mailboxes was classified as "highly inappropriate".

A FAS spokesperson refused to state last night whether any member of staff had been suspended or dismissed as a result of the investigation, the Irish Independent reported.

Meanwhile, Sligo County Council has demanded an inquiry into claims that pornographic images were sent by its officials via email to FAS staff.

A spokesman said the council has asked for details of relevant emails involving the local authority and FAS.

The report said an audit conducted by FAS uncovered a large amount of pornographic and other inappropriate images shared by email with government agencies, and four local authorities: Sligo County Council, Fingal, South Dublin and Kerry County.
