Mayo Council Want Permanent Croagh Patrick Helipad For Injured
The busiest six-week period on record has been reported by Mayo Mountain Rescue, with the majority of call-outs relating to people who have fallen while climbing Croagh Patrick.
Ten of the 14 call-outs involved casualties who fell while descending the “Holy Mountain”.
The Irish Coast Guard, which was involved in airlifting four of them, had to winch people directly off the mountain. Most of the injuries sustained on Croagh Patrick tended to be lower limb injuries and dislocations.
So great is the injury toll on the 2,510ft mountain that Mayo County Council is to seek planning permission for the construction of a permanent helicopter landing pad on the summit or the higher slopes.
Mary Walshe, team leader with Mayo Mountain Rescue, said the number of call-outs in the past number of weeks had been “unprecedented”.

Woman Dies After Mayo Mountain Fall
A woman who fell while climbing in the Mweelrea mountains in Co Mayo yesterday evening has died. Search teams in the Mweelrea Mountains in Co Mayo were called to the scene where the woman, who is in her 30s, fell on Ben Bury peak at around 6.30pm yesterday evening.

A mountain rescue team has recovered the body of the hiker who had gone missing on a Connemara mountain. The 59-year-old hiker's body could not be recovered for almost 24 hours because of the inaccessibility of the location where he had fallen at the weekend.

Search Resumes On Mweelrea Mountain
A search has resumed on Mweelrea Mountain, Co Mayo, for a missing hillwalker. The walker, a male understood to be aged in his 30s, has not been seen since Tuesday night. The man's wife reported him missing. A search was launched on Wednesday involving the Coast Guard and Mayo Mountain Rescue but was ended when at nightfall.

Missing Climbers Return Safely
Four climbers who were reported missing in County Mayo yesterday have returned to their car safe and sound today. Local people alerted the Mayo Mountain Rescue Team after the group of tourists, all from the UK, failed to return from Mweelrea before dark last night.

One-Off Grant Announced For Mountain Rescue Services
A special one-off grant of €200,000 is to be made available for Mountain Rescue Ireland, Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadkar and Minister of State for Tourism & Sport, Michael Ring have announced. The ministers said that the funding would be used to purchase new vehicles and equipment.
