Cathedral Restoration To Create One Hundred Jobs

The restoration of St Mel's Cathedral in Longford, which was destroyed by fire on Christmas Day in 2009, will create over 100 construction jobs.

Contract documents for the rebuilding project will be formally signed on Monday morning by the Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnois, Colm O'Reilly.

A joint Irish consortium of firms from Galway and Longford has won the contract.

The work includes the replacement of 26 limestone columns and pilasters, repair of external stonework around windows and the replacing of internal plaster up to ceiling level.

The jobs will be created in direct labour and sub-contracts.
