GAA Publicly Support Quinn Group
The Gaelic Athletic Association has risked causing upset over the approval of a county board move to publicly support Sean Quinn.
Fans at Saturday's Fermanagh county final in Enniskillen were encouraged over the public address system to rally together and support the family of the bankrupt billionaire.
The group Concerned Irish Citizens had written the announcement, which was read out to the crowd of Gaelic footall fans.
It advertised a rally in support of Sean Quinn in Ballyconnell, Co Cavan, on October 14, urging them to "oppose the injustices against the Quinn family."
The former billionaire was a patron of Gaelic games in the county during his 40 years in business.
A spokesman for the GAA at Croke Park said the announcement was "non-party political" and therefore not a breach of any GAA rules.
There has been wide criticism of the GAA after some of the organisation’s senior officials from across Ireland attended a rally in support of the Quinn Group.
Organisers of the October 14 rally say 'People for Economic Justice' and 'The Anti Eviction Task Force' and a number of other organisations will support the Quinns.
Sean Quinn Snr and his son, Sean Quinn Jnr, are currently under investigation after a judge found the two men, along with Quinn Snr's nephew Peter Darragh Quinn, had failed to adequately comply with a series of orders requiring them to stop stripping assets from the Quinn family's IPG.
The rally is due to take place six days before Sean Quinn Snr is due back in court to answer contempt charges.
His son Sean Jnr will be released this week to attend his Supreme Court appeal.
He was jailed for contempt of orders by the High Court restraining an asset-stripping scheme.
