Cabinet Flies To Brussels Ahead Of Presidency
Ireland’s Cabinet flies out to Brussels today in preparation for the country's presidency of the EU.
The nation’s presidency will begin on 1 January, 2013.
It is thought that Taoiseach Enda Kenny will attempt to discuss with EU chiefs the nature of Ireland’s bank debt deal while there. There is not, in fact, a formal way to raise the debt deal on the agenda, although Mr Kenny said he would bring up the issue.
If a deal cannot be reached by the new year, Ireland’s debt burden threatens to haunt its presidency.
Mr Kenny will travel with Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore along with nine other ministers for meetings with all the European Commissioners, including President Jose-Manuel Barroso and European Council President Herman Van Rompuy.
But the Taoiseach and Tanaiste will not be flying out together.
At the behest of the Department of Defence, Mr Kenny will travel on a commercial flight this morning, returning on the government jet tomorrow evening.
Mr Gilmore will travel out on the jet and return on commercial aircraft, while the rest of the ministers will travel by a mix of jet and commercial planes.
Education Minister Ruairi Quinn is to take Leader's Questions in the Dail while the Taoiseach is in Brussels, as he is the most senior minister left.
But the government has been quick to cover its tracks, maintaining they are not merely leaving someone at home to take charge.
The government has argued that modern technology does not require the transfer of executive powers.
