New Taxi Branding Launched

New branding signage is to be phased into Ireland’s taxi fleet early next year.

The branding has been developed by the National Transport Authority and will see signage affixed to the driver and passenger doors of taxis around the country.

The move is intended to encourage professionalism and accountability within the industry.

The announcement was welcomed by Public Transport Minister Alan Kelly. He said: “New York has yellow taxis, London has the famous black cabs. These approaches would be far too expensive for Irish taxi drivers but to ensure the people who operate in the sector are accountable for their vehicles, we have opted for semi-permanent branding for taxis.

"This is a very significant reform and will encourage a more professional approach to the taxi sector. We want to ensure that those who operate taxis are committed and accountable. It will make it harder for rogue drivers to continue operating in the sector."

Minister Kelly commissioned a review of taxi sector last January.

The branding was developed the National Transport Authority in consultation with the Taxi Advisory Committee and sector representatives.

When the branding comes in , early January 2013, taxis will be required to be fitted with the official signage in order to renew the vehicle licence.

The move will follow a new Taxi Regulation Act, which will implement a number of actions from the taxi review report, including a new online system linking the driver with the vehicle they are using, new age limits for vehicles, the prohibiting of tinted windows and reducing the inactive licence period.
