Private Funeral Held For Jill Meagher
A private funeral service has been held in Melbourne, Australia for the murdered Irishwoman Jill Meagher.
The service took place in the city’s Faulkner Memorial Park and was attended by her husband and a mixture of family and friends.
White ribbon wristbands were handed out to those attending the funeral in order to represent the fight to prevent violence against women.
29 white doves, signifying the Mrs Meagher’s age, were released at the end of the service.
Her father, George McKeon, told mourners how every night his thoughts were crowded with the memories of his daughter, and that he found himself missing her even more.
The park was closed to the public in order to prevent the gathering of large crowds.
Mrs Meagher's family have said they are unable to express their feelings of grief, sadness and sorrow at he death.
They thanked the public for its support but asked for privacy to allow the family grieve.
Mrs Meagher, originally from Co Louth, was murdered nearly two weeks ago on her way home after a night out with her colleagues at ABC Radio, where she worked.
Police investigating found her body at the side of a road at Gisborne South, about 50km north-west of Melbourne.
41-year-old Adrian Ernest Bayley has been charged with her murder and rape.
A memorial mass is due be held in this evening for Mrs Meagher in St Peter's Church, Drogheda at 7pm. A candlelit procession through the town will take place beforehand.
