Taosieach Makes Time Magazine Cover
Enda Kenny features on the cover of the latest Time magazine, making him the first Irish leader to do so since Sean Lamass.
The Taosieach appears on the front of the US publication with the famous 'Time' logo changed to green and a supporting headline which reads "The Celtic Comeback".
The weekly news magazine interviewed Mr Kenny from Government Buildings and has credited him with "leading Ireland’s fight to recover from the bust."
Time made reference to a gradual increase in Ireland’s GDP, adding that the Taosieach may be able to prove himself better than a "fool"; a name used by former Taosieach Brian Cowen to describe Mr Kenny in 2010.
Former Taosieach Sean Lemass was the last Irish leader to appear on the cover of Time. He was put on the front of the magazine in 1963 behind a picture of factory buildings and accompanied by a leprechaun.
When asked by Time magazine why there had been no cutbacks demonstrations in Ireland on the scale seen in other European countries, Mr Kenny replied: "People understand that you have to do difficult things to sort out our own public finances."
The Taosieach was also asked about his career motivations. He said: "I’ve no interest in looking for credit or thanks. Providing a prosperous future for all our people, that’s what drives me."
Time’s Europe editor Catherine Mayer said that Mr Kenny was "extremely likable."
"What I was really trying to see was what was behind that likability. In small groups he is much more fluent and compelling than he would appear to be were you to judge him from his big media set pieces. When cameras train on him he seems to freeze up, which is an interesting problem for somebody in that position. But when he’s relaxed he’s interesting and has a lot to say," she said.
