Penalty Points To Be Increased

The number of penalty points given for not wearing a seatbelt and driving while using a mobile phone will be increased, Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar has confirmed.

Speaking on his way into Government Buildings this morning, Minister Varadkar also said he wanted to increase the penalty points for speeding, RTÉ have reported.

However, he added that an increase would not happen until the speed limits review had been completed, as there are some speed limits that needed to be rationalised.

He said increases were needed because the current penalty levels were obviously not acting as a deterrent, as people are still dying on the roads.

A bill will be drafted in the next few months, and subject to the legislation passing through the Houses of the Oireachtas, he hoped to have the new penalty points structure in operation by early next year.
