Teen Gets Six-Years For Manslaughter Of 73-Year-Old

A Co Leitrim teenager has been sentenced to six years for killing a 73-year-old man two years ago.

19-year-old Brendan McGovern was found not guilty of murder, but convicted of the manslaughter of John Golden at his home in Killeshandra, Co Cavan.

McGovern had claimed that Mr Golden had sexually abused him when he was 13 or 14 years old and he cut down his working hours at a local petrol station to avoid him.

He said he was in a pub on 6 September 2010 when the pensioner smiled in the window at him.

The teenager went to Mr Golden’s home to confront him or, as he put it, to "give him a slap" because of his continued taunts.

However, he said Mr Golden provoked him by presuming he had come for sex. McGovern said he lost control and attacked him.

Mr Golden died in hospital a month later.

Mr Justice Paul Carney said he was suspending two thirds of the sentence because of the teenager's previous good character, his strong work ethic and offer of a plea.
