Suspended Sentence For Child Porn Convicted
A former carer who had been a corporal in the Defence Forces has been given a suspended jail sentence for possession of child pornography.
63-year-old Peter McEvoy, with an address in Drogheda, Co Louth, but living in Ballyleague, Co Roscommon, admitted the offences in June 2009.
A PC technician with whom McEvoy had left a laptop for servicing alerted Gardai.
In a search of McEvoy's then home a laptop and a number of discs were removed.
Gardai found a total of 8,584 digital photos and 697 videos.
Jonathan Kilfeather, defending, told Dundalk Circuit Criminal court McEvoy found the porn by accident and believed that by downloading the files he was removing them from the net. He had become addicted.
McEvoy lived in Thailand for a while and in 2003 began work as a carer with St John of God's in Drumcar, Co Louth.
Judge Michael O'Shea said child pornography was the "most serious exploitation and sexual abuse of young children".
He imposed a two-and-a-half year sentence suspended for three years on condition of McEvoy entering into a good behaviour bond.
