Diesel Laundry Plants Uncovered In Garda Raid

Customs officers in Co Louth have uncovered three diesel laundries.

It is understood that one of the laundries had the capability to wash the colour from 18 million litres of agricultural diesel a year, costing the State €9m in lost revenue.

The raid by customs officers took place near Hackballscross in the early hours of this morning backed up by armed gardaí.

Around 30,000 litres of diesel were seized along with one tanker and three lorries, one with a concealed tank for transporting the laundered diesel.

Thirty-six tonnes of toxic waste, the by-product of washing the diesel, were also found.

A second oil laundry, which used cat litter as a bleaching agent, was also found at the site.

Alongisde these a shebeen with a large quantity of assorted beers, cider and spirits was also found in a shed at the same location.

Three people were arrested and are being held at Dundalk Garda Station.

Containers filled with thousands of litres of toxin diesel sludge have been dumped at the side of a road in County Louth. Two of the six containers found were leaking sludge across the R132, and a clean up operation is currently under way. The road is expected to be closed until noon.

An estimated 3,000 litres of diesel sludge have been found dumped in north Co Louth. Three containers of the toxic oil-laundering waste were discovered on a slip road at Carrickarnon close to the main Dublin-Belfast road late on Wednesday night.

It has been revealed that diesel laundering is costing the Exchequer €150m in tax revenue every year and that 12% of diesel sold in Ireland is illegal. According to recent findings by Retail Ireland the sale of cheap diesel is seriously damaging public finances, funding criminality and harming the environment.

Large-Scale Diesel Laundering Operation Uncovered
An illegal diesel laundering operation has been raided by customs officers and armed garda in Co Monaghan. The dawn raid at a premises at Drumacon, near Castleblayney, uncovered an operation with the capabilities of “washing” dye from some 15, litres of diesel a year. Estimates suggest it could have cost the revenue €8m a year.
